EBSCO eBooks Transition to Thorium Reader on May 19, 2026

Starting May 19, 2026, EBSCO eBooks are transitioning from Adobe DRM using Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) to Readium LCP DRM using Thorium Reader for offline reading.

Thorium Reader supports a more accessible download experience and compatibility with leading reading applications.

Key Points:

  • This change applies only to entire downloaded ebooks. Reading online and downloaded chapters will stay the same.
  • Users  will be prompted to download the Thorium Reader software the first time they download an EBSCO ebook on or after May 19, 2026 using a passcode.
  • Thorium Reader is currently available for Windows and Mac devices only. It is under development for Android and IOS versions which are expected in 2027. For devices using either Android or IOS, EBSCO recommends downloading chapters to read. This differs from  Adobe  Digital Editions which was available on Android and IOS.
